4: Receiving Temple Ordinances and Covenants

15-Minute Lesson on Temple Ordinances

Objective: Help the youth understand the sacredness and importance of ordinances, their spiritual significance, and the blessings they bring, both now and in the eternities.


1. Introduction (2 minutes)

  • Opening Question:
    What do you think of when you hear the word “ordinance”?
    Explain that ordinances are sacred ceremonies with spiritual meaning and effects (D&C 84:21). They help us return to God and live the gospel more fully.

2. Ordinances in the Gospel of Jesus Christ (5 minutes)

  • What are Ordinances?
    Ordinances like baptism, confirmation, and temple ordinances are sacred acts that invite God’s power into our lives. Each ordinance symbolizes a deeper spiritual truth and brings blessings when done with faith and commitment.
    • Examples of Sacred Ceremonies:
      • Baptism: Represents spiritual rebirth, being cleansed of sin.
      • Confirmation: Receiving the Holy Ghost to guide us daily.
      • Sacrament: Renewing covenants, drawing closer to Jesus.
      • Temple Endowment/Sealing: Provides instruction, blessings, and prepares us for eternal life.

3. Effects of Ordinances: Current and Promised Blessings (5 minutes)

  • Current Blessings:
    • Increased spiritual power to resist temptation (D&C 84:21).

  • Promised Blessings:
